The Brown-headed Cowbird

Who'd have known! This is the very first brown-headed cowbird I've seen at my feeders. They almost look like a giant finch.

Maybe they've moved in for the feeders after the buffalo herd left town (a man down the road and around the corner used to have a herd of buffalo. I haven't seen them lately....). They usually feed on the ground, but this little guy is in the swing feeder about six feet up.

About a week after this sighting, a small flock appeared to help the other blackbirds glean some feed. Red-winged blackbirds are also relatively new to my feeders, which is almost amazing knowing how common they are.
